Environments That Heal. Spaces Designed for Every Human SenseWellness CONSULTING
Environments That Heal. Spaces Designed for Every Human Sense.Design is not decoration. It is environmental psychology — the orchestration of the full spectrum of human senses to create spaces that actively support health, cognition, and emotional wellbeing. Sight, hearing, smell, touch, taste, vestibular awareness, and proprioception all shape how a person experiences their environment, consciously or not. Gloria Black has spent nearly 20 years studying this intersection, integrating neuroscience, quantum biomechanics, biophilic principles, and clinical knowledge of special needs and neurodivergence into every wellness project she touches. While most people grew up learning humans have five senses, current research now recognizes anywhere from 22 to 33. Gloria has been designing for the full spectrum her entire career — intuitively, before she had language for it.
The vestibular sense — governing balance and spatial movement — and the proprioceptive sense — governing how the body understands its own position and scale — are almost never addressed by other designers. For clients with vestibular processing disorders, sensory processing differences, anxiety, or neurodivergence, these overlooked dimensions can determine whether a space supports daily functioning or quietly undermines it. Gloria names and designs for the full spectrum of senses as standard practice — not as specialty accommodation.
Her wellness consulting integrates circadian-aligned lighting systems, non-toxic material selection, biophilic design for genuine human-nature connection, professional acoustic treatment, audiovisual environments designed for therapeutic or performance use, air quality and scent design, and tactile material programming. She works with executives, athletes, families with special needs members, retirees planning for aging in place, and anyone whose environment is not yet working as hard for their health as it should be.
